Strengthen your communication, creative voice, and collaboration through group music improvisation.

Embracing [Musical] Space (EMuSe) helps youth and adults build meaningful relationships based in compassionate listening while centering joy and curiosity through interactive, participant-centered workshops.

Who We Are

Mission

Our mission is to empower youth and adults through group music improvisation. Through collaborative music-making, participants draw on their own histories and lived knowledge to build meaningful, reciprocal relationships across educational, professional, and community settings.

Vision

In a world where communities are disenfranchised and silenced, EMuSe envisions communal artmaking as a way to give power back to the people—to harvest joy and collective dreaming as resistance. When this practice is woven into everyday life, we build structures shaped by and for community voice. We have the power to create lasting spaces for belonging.

With several years of experience in community-based arts education—including summer music programs, K–5 literacy, teen center programming, and a music composition and improvisation course offered through an education partnership between the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and American Composers Orchestra (New York)—Nicholas develops a program philosophy rooted in community care and compassionate listening. This practice was further shaped by his graduate fellowship with the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder Center for Humanities and the Arts and the CU Public and Community-Engaged Scholarship Office, which laid the groundwork for his doctoral research. His dissertation Embracing [Musical] Space: Integrating Music Improvisation and Composition to Class Curriculum explores how group music improvisation helps youth build meaningful relationships. The article engages with culturally sustaining pedagogies and restorative practice, grounding the relational work within a historical lineage. Nicholas partners with K–12 schools, universities, nonprofits, and community organizations to integrate improvisation into everyday practice.

Meet the Founder

Dr. Nicholas Felder

Founder and Director

Dr. Nicholas Felder, DMA in music composition (he/him) is the Founder and Director of Embracing [Musical] Space (EMuSe), where he designs and facilitates improvisation-based workshops that empower youth and adults in co-creation and leadership.

Our Story

Embracing [Musical] Space draws on founder Nicholas Felder’s background as a Black queer person with musical roots in R&B and gospel and training in Western classical. Despite his admiration for the Western classical styles, Nicholas realized that the way they were taught in school made him compartmentalize his identity. During his graduate studies, Nicholas reconnected with African American gospel music and was enamored by its liberatory structure, creating space for people to share their stories and just be. Gospel music utilizes repetition and call and response, centering phrases that hold shared meaning; such practice is essential to building and expressing communal belonging.

Inspired by gospel traditions, EMuSe uses word association games to invite participants to explore the rhythm of words and then transform their names into layered rhythmic grooves. These spoken word exercises meet people where they are and call in thoughtful connection while honoring oral traditions, such as African American gospel and folk, that have been historically marginalized in traditional music educational spaces. Uplifting the traditions in EMuSe workshops encourages participants to draw on their own histories, knowledges, and experiences to create music together. EMuSe aims to show people that they already know a lot about music through their many years of listening and can use their voices to share that knowledge. Group music improvisation is a way to give power back to the people.
